No, I'm not talking about NFL training camps, though those are going to be firing up soon.
I'm talking about the MLB trading deadline and the rumors are flying. My Phillies are seriously lagging behind the Atlanta Braves and NY Mets in the NL East. A full 7 games as of today. If they are looking to be a contender this season and they want to make moves, then they need to get started.
The current rumors have the Phightin' Phils looking to trade for Roy Oswalt of the Astros, Dan Haren of the D'backs, Ben Sheets of Oakland, or Jeremy Guthrie of your Baltimore Orioles.
I have no idea why they would be interested in a pitcher (Guthrie) who hasn't been above .500 pitching since 2007. Sheets is trying to resurrect his career after being out injured in 2009, and so far this season isn't exactly setting the world on fire. Dan Haren has a huge upside. I think he just needs a change of scenery to get back to his Cy Young form.
The most intriguing name in the rumors is Oswalt. Here is a guy who has posted double digit wins every year except for the last 2 seasons. Hopefully the Phils can pull that trade off to get Oswalt, since they were unable to get Cliff Lee back from Seattle.
Imagine a front 3 of Doc Halladay/Hamels/Oswalt? As Oprah said once upon a time, "Wow wow wow wow wow."
